Here is a brief tutorial on how to setup the trolley rig for pier fishing. The object of the trolley rig is to keep your bait near the surface and away from the pier regardless of the tide. The trolley rod is snagged on the bottom of the ocean floor, and it sits stationary. The trolley rods only purpose is to keep the bait away from the bridge, the trolley rod sits in a secured PVC pipe. The rig consists of a clothes pin, rubber band, 12 inches of mono leader and a small snap swivel. Snap the snap swivel to the trolley line, holding the clothes pin so it doesn’t slide to the bottom of the ocean floor. The clothes pin is then attached to the main rod leader. Typically this rig is used for pelagics such as toothy kingfish and Bonita, so you want to use a light wire stinger rig to prevent cut offs.
Now you want to hook the largest white bait or blue runner that you have in the nose with the J hook, allow the treble stinger hook to lie freely next to the bait. Place the trolley rod into the PVC and tighten the line to remove slack and allow the rig to slide gracefully down the line. Pickup your main rod and feed line until your bait reaches the water. Your bait should now swim at the surface in circles. (Like a wounded baitfish would do) This is typically what draws the aggressive strike. Once the fish strikes the bait, the leader will pop off of the clothes pin and the fight will begin. From that moment you would fight the fish like you normally would. I like to tie up the main rod, and loosen the drag to a strike preference with the clicker engaged, so that the fish hooks itself. I didn’t show you this in the video because I don’t want anyone coming back to me saying I gave them the wrong information and they lost their rod. There is an effective way to tie down your main rod, so that it is secure but easily accessible once a strike occurs. Please like and subscribe so we can continue to help others learn.
