The setting sun plunges the Tucson Mountains into silhouette and casts a golden glow upon the fields and stables of the University of Arizona Equine Center. UA student Nicole Chapman is just starting her shift caring for thoroughbreds and quarter horses that are used in classes such as horsemanship, equitation workshop, weanling management and yearling management.
Chapman has a busy schedule, which includes participating in the Blue Chip program, a four-year leadership experience program at the University of Arizona which offers a variety of programs and workshops in professional development and career readiness throughout their time in the program. This year alone, the program doubled in size from 200 to 400 students, making it one of the largest student engagement experiences on campus.
Chapman is a peer leader for Blue Chip, overseeing team leaders and first year Blue Chip students. She helps guide these students in learning personal skills and developing their professional acumen. In addition, she works with first year students to aid in their transition from high school to college, aiding retention. Blue Chip gives students an invaluable opportunity to have an experiential learning experience, network with their peers and learn the skills that make them successful students and wildcats!
In addition to her busy campus schedule, Chapman volunteers at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona and Guide Dogs for the Blind as a puppy raiser. She also works as an Administrative Assistant at the College of Engineering and part-time as a Sales Associate at Petsmart. Being engaged is important to Chapman because she believes in creating success and making a difference in the community.
As Chapman says, “Blue Chip allowed me to learn about important leadership and professional skills and gives me the opportunity to practice them. It’s not just about learning; it’s about effective application and preparing students by keeping them engaged in learning”.
Chapman is one example of the caliber of students Blue Chip helps to shape. Through her success, she encourages and mentors other students to become more engaged with our community.
Post-graduation, Chapman plans to pursue her Master’s in Public Administration and looks forward to making an impact on our community through her work.
Chapman finished by saying, “I don’t want to be the best, I just want to be the best that I can be”.
