  • Bullet casting and reloading pointed monster bullets. Casting and loading up some 375 Grain Spire Point 50 caliber bullets for the 500 Smith & Wesson magnum revolver. The mold is an NOE double cavity spire point gas check design. I am using previously fired cases and Accurate 1680 powder. I contacted Accurate powders for load information for this bullet.

The gun being used is an 8-3/8″ barrel Smith & Wesson 500 revolver. This is a stainless steel gun built on Smith & Wesson’s X-Frame. Double Action. It has a fiber optic green front sight and is relatively heavy.

I am using previously fired brass cases. I prepped them by depriming with the lee universal decapping die then wet tumbled them with stainless steel pin media in the Thumlers rotary Tumbler. I use hot water, dish soap, and a small amount of lemi shine powdered detergent for its citric acid content. This combination provides a very nice clean shine to the brass.

Most modern 500 S&W brass uses LARGE RIFLE primers.

I lubed and sized the cast bullets (boolits) in the RCBS LAM (lube-a-matic) with a lyman 501 sizing die. The lube used is white label 2500+ which doesn’t require a heater.

I used the lee 500 S&W die set to expand the case mouths and the seating die to seat and crimp the bullets. I used a moderate crimp (not heavy) which worked well. I used an RCBS rock chucker to size the cases and the RCBS Junior press to seat and crimp.

Casting bullets from lead yourself is a great hobby and a fantastic way to make your ammo cheap. If your lead is scrounged then it is pretty much like getting free bullets if you write off equipment costs. Cheap ammo, cheap shooting!
